Surveillance Doesn't Make Us Safer

Short thesis

This session will explore the increasing use of surveillance in the city of Detroit, a majority black city through the Project Greenlight Program and facial recognition technology, and how a coalition of organizations in Detroit are challenging the city's use of this technology.

Description

This session will explore the increasing use of surveillance in the city of Detroit, a majority black city through the Project Greenlight Program and facial recognition technology, and how a coalition of organizations in Detroit are challenging the city's use of this technology. Participants will hear the latest research on these technologies, hear about the work of the coalition and organizations challenging the technologies, what really makes us safer and suggested policy changes.

Additionally, this session looks at polices power to take alleged Islamist 'dangerous suspects' in custody and its almost exclusive use against asylum-seekers in Germany, which shows: All of us are affected by state-run surveillance and the increasing use of individual-targeted prediction software but only some of us already experience its immediate and very tangible consequences.
