Limbo; or Existing Between the Lines

Short thesis

“Limbo; or Existing Between the Lines” is a collaborative presentation by Claudia Owusu and Kuukua Eshun exploring the complexities of home and the many forms it takes for a child in the African diaspora. Through the short films “How Did Home Receive You?” (2018) and “Artist, Act of Love” (2019), Eshun and Owusu take on themes of solitude, heartbreak, and loneliness to question what it means to pledge allegiance to a nation, a person, a point in time, or the self.

Description

“Limbo; or Existing Between the Lines” is a collaborative presentation by Claudia Owusu and Kuukua Eshun exploring the complexities of home and the many forms it takes for a child in the African diaspora. Through the short films “How Did Home Receive You?” (2018) and “Artist, Act of Love” (2019), Eshun and Owusu take on themes of solitude, heartbreak, and loneliness to question what it means to pledge allegiance to a nation, a person, a community, a point in time, and lastly, the self. We want to proceed by screening both films and hosting a talk back with an audience about their own experience with home, and it’s influence on how they move through the world. We want to touch on themes of exile, solitude, hurt, pain, belonging, unbelonging, and most importantly, the struggle of being in limbo between two places. Starting up this conversation will set the tone of solidarity among the audience and the community at large. We will also lead our audience members through a self-reflective writing exercise, and at the end, hope that they reach a new realization about themselves and their place in the world. Home can be infinite, can be with or without borders, home can be reclusive, it can be inside of a person, a love, a moment, a system. Home can hurt, it can exile, it can imprison, it can erase, it can condemn, it can vilify. This duality exists within us all and surrounds us in our day to day. In discussing this, we hope to deconstruct the definitions of home and who exactly is invited to call a place home.
